Amazon RDS enhances multi-AZ replication with ENA Express support
Amazon RDS now supports ENA Express for improved Multi-AZ replication, offering enhanced network performance and reduced latency variability. The service is available at no extra cost across various regions.
Amazon RDS has integrated ENA Express to improve replication traffic for Multi-AZ instances across different Availability Zones. ENA Express utilizes AWS’s Scalable Reliable Datagram (SRD) protocol, which optimizes network performance by providing up to 25 Gbps of single-flow bandwidth for cross-AZ replication traffic. This is achieved through advanced congestion control and multi-pathing capabilities, significantly reducing latency variability for Multi-AZ deployments.
The RDS Multi-AZ instances are designed to replicate data synchronously to a standby instance located in a separate Availability Zone, ensuring high availability and enabling automatic failover. The use of AWS SRD by ENA Express enhances replication efficiency by dynamically distributing traffic over multiple network paths and adjusting to real-time congestion.
With the implementation of ENA Express, Amazon RDS Multi-AZ instances experience increased write throughput and reduced write latencies, particularly benefiting write-intensive database workloads. Importantly, ENA Express is available without additional costs for Amazon RDS for MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Db2, and Oracle.
The service is supported in a wide range of regions including Africa (Cape Town), Asia Pacific (Hong Kong, Hyderabad, Jakarta, Malaysia, Melbourne, Mumbai, New Zealand, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei, Thailand, Tokyo), Canada (Central, Calgary), Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland, London, Milan, Paris, Spain, Stockholm, Zurich), Israel (Tel Aviv), Mexico (Central), US East (N. Virginia, Ohio), US West (N. California, Oregon), and AWS GovCloud (US).
To activate ENA Express on existing Amazon RDS instances, users must perform a start-stop or scale compute action. Detailed information on supported instance types for ENA Express can be found in the user guide.
