Amazon WorkSpaces introduces AI agent capability for desktop applications

Amazon WorkSpaces, a fully managed cloud desktop service by Amazon Web Services (AWS), has announced a new feature allowing AI agents to securely access and operate desktop applications within managed WorkSpaces environments. This development addresses a significant challenge for many enterprises that rely on desktop applications for critical business processes, such as mainframes, ERP systems, and proprietary tools, which often lack modern API support.

The new capability enables organizations to automate routine workflows at scale while maintaining comprehensive enterprise-grade governance and compliance. AI agents, regardless of where they are built or operated—whether cloud-hosted, on-premises, or in hybrid environments—can now connect to business applications with minimal coding requirements through the industry-standard Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration.

This integration allows developers to achieve rapid time-to-value without the need for setting up additional infrastructure. IT administrators can continue to enforce centralized permissions, logging, and auditing controls that are consistent with those used in human-operated WorkSpaces environments. Enhanced enterprise observability features, such as screenshots and activity metrics, provide complete visibility into the actions of AI agents.
