Samsung SmartThings enhances integration with IKEA Matter devices
Samsung SmartThings has expanded its integration with IKEA’s smart home devices, enhancing accessibility and ease of use for consumers. The collaboration supports seamless connections with various IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices, making smart home technology more accessible.
Samsung Electronics’ SmartThings platform has expanded its capabilities by integrating with IKEA’s latest smart home product line, aiming to make smart home technology more accessible. This collaboration allows a seamless connection of IKEA’s Matter-over-Thread devices, such as smart bulbs and plugs, to the SmartThings ecosystem, enabling users to easily incorporate these devices into their daily routines.
Among the twenty-five IKEA devices that now support the global smart home standard Matter are a scroll wheel remote, smart bulbs, plugs, and various sensors for temperature, humidity, air quality, motion, doors, and water leaks. Previously, connecting these devices required both an IKEA smart home hub and a SmartThings hub. However, they can now be directly connected to the SmartThings hub, facilitating integration with Samsung appliances like TVs, air conditioners, and washing machines, as well as various third-party devices supported by the platform.
The integration offers practical benefits, such as using an IKEA door sensor to monitor the activities of family members through SmartThings Family Care, providing a convenient way to check on loved ones remotely. Additionally, IKEA’s air quality and temperature sensors can gather environmental data, which SmartThings analyzes to offer actionable insights for optimizing sleep environments, such as adjusting the room temperature.
Ahead of the product launch, Samsung and IKEA conducted extensive validation rounds to ensure connectivity stability and a seamless user experience within the SmartThings app. The scroll wheel remote stands out for its intuitive control, allowing users to adjust lighting brightness and color temperature precisely, appealing to design-conscious individuals who value aesthetics.
Samsung is leading the charge in the smart home market by adopting new standards like Thread 1.4, a vital networking technology for smart home ecosystems. This allows Thread networks from different brands to function as a unified system, enhancing user convenience and promoting the broader adoption of smart home solutions.
Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President of SmartThings at Samsung Electronics, emphasized that the integration with IKEA devices provides an easy and familiar connectivity experience for new smart home users without financial strain. SmartThings aims to continue expanding its ecosystem through strategic partnerships, offering consumers a seamless smart home experience regardless of brand or protocol.
Availability and timing of these integrations may vary by market. Matter is a global standard developed to enhance device interoperability, while Thread is a wireless protocol that enables efficient communication among smart home devices.
