Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 introduces new adversaries
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 by Auroch Digital introduces new enemies and factions, expanding gameplay with unique adversaries and allies. The game is set to release later this year.
Auroch Digital is set to release Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, a sequel to their dynamic retro shooter, promising an expanded array of adversaries, weaponry, and innovative gameplay experiences.
Matt Bone, the lead designer, and Mark Chambers, the lead artist, recently discussed their favorite new enemies and offered insights into their development and roles within the game. The discussion included some exclusive reveals.
Matt Bone: An exciting feature of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is the inclusion of all four Chaos god factions for the first time. Players will engage in battles against foes from the Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne, and Slaanesh factions, alongside the returning Black Legion forces.
Slaanesh: Daemonette
Bone emphasized the importance of including Daemonettes as a new enemy, highlighting their significance within the Slaanesh faction. These units are designed to emphasize themes of elusiveness and disorientation, featuring abilities that allow them to perform dramatic leaps and phase attacks. Their presence is visually enhanced with special screen effects as they engage players.
Chambers noted the visual spectacle of Daemonettes, particularly during phase attacks, utilizing a freeze frame technique to create a sprite trail. The team also incorporated unsettling facial changes and underwater motion effects for added detail.
Khorne: Bloodcrusher
The introduction of the Bloodcrusher posed a technical challenge as it is the first mounted unit in Boltgun. The unit features a Bloodletter rider that can dismount during combat, creating two formidable enemies. The Juggernaut mount has a consume ability, allowing it to regain health by consuming nearby corpses.
Chambers highlighted the complexity of the animation, combining two enemies into one, and praised the visual impact of the charge ability, which emphasizes the relentless nature of the attack.
Nurgle: Blightlord Terminator
Including Chaos Marine units for each Chaos faction was a priority, leading to the addition of Plague Marines and Blightlord Terminators for Nurgle. These units focus on area denial gameplay, utilizing blight grenades and corrupt flails to create hazardous zones.
Chambers expressed enthusiasm for creating Nurgle-related art, noting the detailed sprite quality and the visual effects that enhance the portrayal of corruption and decay.
Tzeentch: Scarab Occult Terminator
The Tzeentch faction features Rubric Marines and Scarab Occult Terminators, emphasizing bullet hell gameplay. The Hellfyre Missile Rack on the Terminators launches a barrage of missiles, creating a distinct combat experience.
Chambers appreciated the opportunity to explore Tzeentch’s visual characteristics, enhancing color schemes and effects to reflect the faction’s unique identity.
Astra Militarum: Death Korps of Krieg
As a special reveal, Boltgun 2 will introduce allied units for the first time, with the Death Korps of Krieg joining players in combat. These units are depicted with iconic lasgun weaponry, gas masks, and trench coats.
Chambers expressed excitement about bringing these allies to life, ensuring the design faithfully represents the miniatures.
With a host of new enemies, characters, weapons, and worlds, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 promises an enriched gaming experience. Players can wishlist the game on PlayStation 5 ahead of its release later this year.
