Play by Play Studios has announced the upcoming release of their new game, NBA The Run, for PlayStation 5, slated for June. The studio has also unveiled the first gameplay trailer, providing a glimpse into what fans can expect from this exciting new title.
NBA The Run introduces players to exhilarating knockout tournaments held on famous streetball courts worldwide. Each match consists of four rounds, featuring quick-paced gameplay with randomized rules that require players to adapt their strategies dynamically. The goal is to accumulate as many trophies as possible while navigating the fast-paced rounds.
The game also features a momentum-based system that unlocks unique abilities for players, akin to “ultimate” moves seen in hero games. These abilities, such as the offensive “Posterizer” or the defensive “The Shadow,” can dramatically alter the course of a match when activated, allowing players to seize control of the game.
Players can earn in-game currency, known as Cred, by winning matches. This currency can be used in The Shop to unlock various cosmetic items, including jerseys, advanced dunks, taunts, badges, and banners. Among the most coveted items are Rookie Variants, which allow players to experience young versions of NBA All-Stars such as Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, each with distinct playing styles.
In addition to purchases from The Shop, ranking up in NBA The Run unlocks access to streetball legends, each possessing unique strengths and weaknesses. Notably, Bobbito Garcia, renowned for his exceptional ball-handling skills, will be available as a playable character.
Play by Play Studios emphasizes their commitment to building NBA The Run in collaboration with the player community. The final court included at launch was selected through a fan vote, and player feedback has influenced various game features, including dunk animations and gameplay modes. The game will offer a Shootaround mode for practice and Knockout Friends, a private tournament mode accommodating up to 48 players.
