Amazon DocumentDB supports in-place upgrade from version 5.0 to 8.0

Amazon DocumentDB now allows an in-place upgrade from version 5.0 to 8.0, enhancing performance and reducing costs without requiring new clusters or endpoint changes.

Amazon DocumentDB, compatible with MongoDB, now supports an in-place major version upgrade from version 5.0 to 8.0. This upgrade can be executed with minimal effort using the AWS Management Console, AWS SDK, or AWS CLI. Notably, this process does not require the creation of new clusters, changes to endpoints, or the rebuilding of indexes.

Upgrading to version 8.0 offers significant enhancements in both performance and cost-efficiency. Query latency is improved by as much as sevenfold, while storage compression is enhanced up to fivefold. These improvements allow applications to operate more efficiently on reduced storage, thereby lowering operational costs. Additionally, version 8.0 introduces new features such as collation, views, new aggregation stages and operators, enhanced text search with the new text index v2, and vector index builds that are up to 30 times faster.

The in-place major version upgrade from 5.0 to 8.0 is available in all AWS Regions where Amazon DocumentDB 8.0 is offered, and it comes at no extra cost. For those interested in initiating the upgrade, detailed instructions are available in the in-place MVU documentation. Further information on Amazon DocumentDB 8.0 can be found in the official documentation.
