James Bond game ‘007: First Light’ offers a blend of stealth, action, and strategy

IO Interactive’s ‘007: First Light’ combines stealth, action, and strategy to offer an engaging James Bond experience. The game is set to release on PlayStation 5 on May 27.

The announcement that IO Interactive, known for developing Hitman: World of Assassination, would take on the James Bond franchise with 007: First Light was met with much enthusiasm. The studio’s expertise in stealth, strategy, and improvisation seemed a natural fit for the iconic spy character.

Having recently experienced three missions from 007: First Light, it is clear that IO Interactive has crafted a game that seamlessly blends action with a thoughtful espionage experience.

Bond’s beginnings

Unlike the film series, 007: First Light presents an original narrative set in the present day, exploring James Bond’s early days. Initially, players meet Bond serving in the Royal Navy during a mission in Iceland. After an unexpected missile attack, Bond finds himself stranded and must navigate through hostile mercenaries to survive.

Bond’s skills are immediately evident as he cleverly uses a parka to blend in and gather intelligence, showcasing his analytical nature. However, this young Bond also displays a certain impulsiveness, as he defies orders to rescue captured allies, culminating in a thrilling escape sequence.

Welcome to MI6

Despite his insubordination, Bond’s actions in Iceland draw the attention of MI6. Following a sequence reminiscent of traditional Bond film credits, the narrative shifts to Malta, where Bond undergoes MI6 training.

The training mission challenges players to navigate through ruins guarded by soldiers, using either stealth or direct confrontation. Equipped with Q gadgets, Bond has multiple options to handle adversaries, from hacking distractions to using a laser-equipped watch.

Combat requires strategic timing, as players must effectively use punches, blocks, and evasive maneuvers. The game encourages improvisation, allowing players to combine gadgets and environmental interactions to overcome challenges.

Honing the craft

The third mission, set in Kensington, emphasizes Bond’s quick thinking and charm. After surviving an assassination attempt, Bond pursues the attacker across London to a museum gala.

This mission offers a “wide-linear” design, providing numerous ways to proceed. Players can gather intel by eavesdropping or use gadgets to create distractions, enabling them to bypass security or gain access to restricted areas.

An encounter at the gala requires players to impersonate a journalist, testing their attention to detail and conversational skills. This scenario highlights the game’s reliance on both stealth and social manipulation.

Adapting on the fly

A confrontation with the assassin in the museum’s basement leads to an intense battle. Utilizing stealth and gadgets, Bond sets traps to incapacitate the foe. The mission continues with an escape sequence that combines all of Bond’s capabilities: stealth, combat, and gadget use.

The finale features a high-octane chase with Bond commandeering a garbage truck to elude mercenaries, showcasing the game’s dynamic action elements.

The preview of 007: First Light demonstrates IO Interactive’s skill in capturing the essence of the Bond franchise, offering players the chance to embody a sophisticated and resourceful spy. The game is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on May 27.
