Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight offers a fresh take on the classic hero’s tales

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight offers a humorous and fresh perspective on the iconic hero’s stories. The game, launching on PS5 on May 22, features a blend of classic tales reimagined with humor and respect for the original material.

In the iconic Haly’s Circus, the renowned Flying Graysons are once again facing a dramatic fall. However, this time, instead of the usual tragic outcome where Dick Grayson mourns his parents, the story takes a comedic twist. The duo survives, only to fire their son, leading Bruce Wayne to recruit him as Robin. This playful alteration of the narrative is emblematic of what Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight strives to achieve: delivering entertainment for all ages while respecting the original material. Ahead of its PlayStation 5 release on May 22, I had the opportunity to explore Gotham City and experience what the game has to offer. Although I explored the single-player mode, the game will also support two-player local co-op.

Reimagining classic tales

As demonstrated by the Flying Graysons scenario, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight seeks to challenge traditional storylines by injecting humor and new perspectives. The game draws inspiration from various sources, including comics, TV shows, animated series, and other video games. Matt Ellison, Executive Producer at TT Games, notes, “We aimed to create the ultimate Batman background story. DC Comics described this game as a remix of Batman’s Greatest Hits. We want to craft a unique narrative and present him in a fresh light.”

This creative blend includes references like the red Bat-phone from the Adam West TV series and costumes from the popular comic book Absolute Batman.

Cinematic influences

To keep the characters current, some, such as Catwoman and Commissioner Gordon, have been influenced by Warner Bros.’ The Batman film, with performances that nod to the movie while maintaining originality. Matt mentions, “Jim Gordon is portrayed by Colin McFarlane, who also played Commissioner Loeb in The Dark Knight. His voice fits the character perfectly, offering gravitas and entertainment. The interaction of their voices was crucial to the story.”

Combat inspired by Arkham Asylum

The game’s mechanics also draw from other sources, featuring a combat system reminiscent of the Batman: Arkham Asylum series. Players can execute chain attacks and counters, with special moves activated once the Focus Meter is full. This system comes into play when navigating Gotham City, responding to distress calls, and battling a variety of adversaries.

Innovative gadgets

The game allows players to use a range of gadgets, reminiscent of Tim Burton’s Batman film. Each of the seven playable characters, including Batman, Gordon, Robin, and Catwoman, has unique tools. Notable gadgets include Catwoman’s feline companion and Gordon’s foam sprayer, which can disable enemies and security systems.

Stealth and humor

Stealth gameplay is also featured, with players sneaking through environments like the Iceberg Lounge. Discovery doesn’t result in game over but leads to engaging combat scenarios. The game’s humor shines through in these moments, with characters delivering witty lines and engaging in comical situations.

A vibrant Gotham City

The open-world design of Gotham City is filled with references, interactive elements, and activities. Players can traverse the city using the Batmobile or other means, engaging in various challenges and enjoying the lively atmosphere.

Costume variety

Players can choose from a range of costumes for each character, celebrating Batman’s rich history across different media. Matt states, “We want to honor the character’s legacy while allowing players with varying levels of Batman knowledge to enjoy the game. There’s something for everyone.”

Fans can look forward to joining the celebration when Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight releases on PS5 on May 22.
