PS5 system update introduces enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution
The PS5 system update introduces an upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), enhancing image stability and clarity across supported games. Several developers have begun integrating this technology into their titles.
The latest update for the PlayStation 5 system software has been released, introducing broad support for an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This enhancement aims to improve image stability, clarity in fine details, and performance consistency across supported games.
PSSR is an AI-driven technology that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel to upscale game visuals. With this latest iteration, image reconstruction is more accurate, motion stability is enhanced, and developers have increased flexibility in balancing performance and visual fidelity on the PS5 Pro.
Several game developers have already begun integrating the upgraded PSSR into their titles. Konami Digital Entertainment has announced that both SILENT HILL 2 and SILENT HILL f will utilize this new technology. The production team for SILENT HILL f noted that the update provides a smoother gameplay experience, with fine details like swaying grass and shadows rendered with greater clarity, enhancing the immersive experience.
Electronic Arts has also adopted the upgraded PSSR for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Maciej Kurowski, BioWare Studio Technical Director, highlighted that the new PSSR significantly enhances image quality while maintaining stable framerates in both Fidelity and Performance modes.
Remedy Entertainment is incorporating the updated PSSR into Control and Alan Wake 2, resulting in improved image stability and motion clarity. Tatu Aalto, Graphics Technical Director at Remedy, emphasized that these improvements are accessible to all PS5 Pro owners, enhancing the overall visual experience.
Ninja Theory has integrated the upgraded PSSR into Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, with Studio Head Dom Matthews expressing excitement about the enhanced particle effects and visual presentation.
Square Enix has also utilized the upgraded PSSR for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, refining the visual quality and stability. This update allows for more immersive gameplay experiences, according to Naoki Hamaguchi, Director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Koei Tecmo Games is applying the updated PSSR to Nioh 3 and Rise of the Ronin, enhancing environmental details and image clarity. Producer Kohei Shibata noted the sharper representation of natural objects and maintained high-definition details during fast-paced action scenes.
Capcom has incorporated the upgraded PSSR into Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon’s Dogma 2, further improving image clarity and stability.
The updated PSSR is included in the latest PS5 system software update, which started rolling out in phases on March 16. Users can manually check for and install the update via the PS5 system settings. In addition to the aforementioned titles, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077 will soon receive patches to support the new PSSR.
