Damon and Baby offers unique twin-stick shooter experience releasing March 26
Arc System Works’ Damon and Baby is a new twin-stick shooter offering a mix of action and humor. This game departs from their fighting game roots and releases on March 26.
Arc System Works, along with Executive Director Daisuke Ishiwatari, known for their expertise in fighting games, are venturing into new territory with their latest release, Damon and Baby. This upcoming action-adventure game marks a significant departure from their previous titles such as Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Featuring an overhead perspective, the game combines twin-stick shooter mechanics with a whimsical, cartoonish art style and a clever, satirical narrative.
Damon and Baby promises a rich and challenging gaming experience. Having spent the initial 10 hours with the game, I explored its mix of action-packed gameplay and comedic elements.
Players assume the role of Damon, a demon with lofty ambitions, who finds himself in an unexpected alliance with a priest. The story begins with the priest, gravely injured, entrusting Damon with a baby. Due to supernatural circumstances, Damon and the baby become inseparable, as Damon is instantly teleported back to her if he strays too far.
Forced to pause his demonic aspirations to care for the child, Damon embarks on a quest to separate himself from the baby. However, he soon discovers that demonic forces, led by Death, are intent on claiming the child. Despite his gruff demeanor, Damon reveals a softer side, taking up arms against supernatural foes.
Dynamic twin-stick combat
In Damon and Baby, players face numerous adversaries using a combination of melee attacks and four weapon types: pistols, shotguns, machine guns, and rocket launchers. Each weapon category offers various models with distinct stats and capabilities, such as additional bullet spread or piercing shots.
These weapons are suited to different scenarios, requiring players to frequently switch tactics to combat a diverse array of enemies, from simple knife-wielding spirits to formidable, shield-bearing fiends.
Utilizing the baby
The game introduces intriguing mechanics, such as the ability to throw the baby, allowing Damon to teleport to her location. This move enables players to traverse large gaps and serves as a primary dodge maneuver during combat.
Players must master this ability, as enemies deliver powerful attacks. Although Damon and Baby features a playful art style, it presents significant challenges. Boss encounters, such as a katana-wielding wolf or a sniper moth in a grocery store, demand skill and strategy.
The baby throw is one of several abilities unlocking expansive exploration opportunities. As Damon acquires skills like double-jumping and wall-jumping, and “ultimate” abilities to destroy certain objects, players can revisit previous areas to uncover secrets, gather power-ups, or earn money to purchase new weapons. The game’s levels are vast, offering numerous secrets alongside the demonic adversaries.
Comedic supernatural world
What stands out most in Damon and Baby is its comedic tone. Set in a world where interactions with demons, angels, and monsters are routine, the game portrays Heaven and Hell as bureaucratic entities, with paperwork mishaps stripping Damon of his powers at the outset.
Damon’s quest leads him to Sedona, Arizona, aided by eccentric characters like a demonic insurance agent, a vampire mafioso, and an angelic cook. The game blends the supernatural with the mundane, resulting in humorous scenarios as Damon navigates his journey.
Players can immerse themselves in the quirky, expansive world of Damon and Baby when it launches on PS5 and PS4 on March 26.
