Study by Samsung reveals growing privacy concerns in public smartphone usage

Samsung’s study reveals widespread privacy concerns with public smartphone use, highlighting accidental exposure of personal content. In response, Samsung introduces Privacy Display on Galaxy S26 Ultra to enhance user privacy.

A recent study conducted by Samsung Electronics has brought to light significant privacy concerns associated with the use of smartphones in public spaces across Europe. The survey, which involved 11,000 participants, discovered that 56% of individuals have inadvertently seen the content on someone else’s smartphone screen, while 24% admitted to doing so intentionally due to curiosity.

The research highlights a discrepancy between perceived privacy and actual privacy in public smartphone usage. Despite 48% of respondents believing their phone use is private when in public, 52% acknowledged that it is relatively easy to view others’ screens. These findings suggest the creation of an ‘accidental audience,’ where personal and sensitive information is inadvertently exposed because screens are visible in public settings. As a result, 38% of those surveyed have either postponed or refrained from engaging in certain activities on their devices due to concerns about being watched.

The study further emphasizes the sensitivity of the information potentially exposed in such scenarios. One-third of the participants reported witnessing personal content on other people’s devices, which included messages, photographs, video calls, and even financial information. Nearly half of the respondents felt that someone was looking at their screen, and 42% stopped using their phones in such situations.

In response to these privacy issues, Samsung has introduced the Privacy Display feature on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. This built-in feature limits screen visibility to direct viewing angles, thereby protecting sensitive information without sacrificing display quality. Coupled with a commitment to provide seven years of security updates, this innovation demonstrates Samsung’s ongoing dedication to enhancing real-world privacy protection.
