Myst and Riven remakes set to launch on PS5 and PS VR2 on May 19

Cyan has announced the launch of modern remakes of Myst and Riven for PS5 and PS VR2 on May 19, featuring enhanced graphics and gameplay options. These remakes aim to leverage PS5 capabilities, offering both 2D and VR playstyles.

Cyan, the developer behind the celebrated puzzle adventure games Myst and Riven, has announced the upcoming release of modern remakes for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2, scheduled for May 19. These iconic games, originally launched on PC and the original PlayStation in the 1990s, became instant classics. Myst, released in 1993, enjoyed a remarkable decade-long reign as the best-selling PC game globally. To honor their legacy on the original PlayStation, classic versions of Myst and Riven were digitally re-released last year through a collaboration between Cyan and Sony Interactive Entertainment, and remain available for purchase worldwide.

The remakes are designed to fully utilize the capabilities of both the PS5 and PS5 Pro, offering players an enhanced gaming experience tailored to their preferred playstyle. Myst and Riven will support both 2D flatscreen and PS VR2 modes, a challenging development process that required adapting lessons learned from Cyan’s previous PS5 title, Firmament, which also supported both playstyles. This approach aims to optimize interactions, graphical fidelity, resolution, and performance for each mode, with insights from these new releases feeding back into improvements for Firmament.

Ray tracing technology will enhance the visual experience in flatscreen mode through ray-traced reflections, available on both the PS5 and PS5 Pro. When enabled, the frame rate is set to 30 FPS to ensure a smooth experience, while disabling this feature increases the frame rate to 60 FPS and uses screen-space reflections. Players can toggle ray-traced reflections in the Display settings menu, allowing them to balance graphic quality with performance.

Both Myst and Riven are officially PS5 Pro Enhanced titles, offering superior graphical fidelity in flatscreen mode, including improved view distances, textures, and shading. VR players on the PS5 Pro will also benefit from enhanced base render resolution. The games employ a refined version of Unreal Engine’s TSR for upscaling, providing better graphics options on both PS5 models.

Additionally, Myst and Riven will support the PS5’s Power Saver Mode, which reduces energy consumption by scaling back performance, decreasing render resolution, and setting a fixed frame rate of 30 FPS.

The Cyan team has dedicated considerable effort to ensure these remakes leverage the full suite of PS5 features, especially for PS5 Pro users. Whether players choose to engage with these titles on a traditional screen or through the immersive experience of PS VR2, they are promised a captivating adventure. Myst and Riven are available for wishlist starting today, May 5, and will be available for purchase at $34.99 each starting May 19.
