AWS launches preview of Agent Registry for centralized discovery and governance

AWS has introduced the preview of its AWS Agent Registry, a centralized catalog for agent and tool discovery, enhancing AI infrastructure visibility and governance.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the preview availability of its AWS Agent Registry through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. This new feature serves as a private, governed catalog and discovery layer for agents, tools, skills, MCP servers, and custom resources within an organization. The registry is designed to provide teams with comprehensive visibility into their AI infrastructure, allowing them to identify existing agents and tools, thereby avoiding the duplication of efforts by rebuilding capabilities that are already in place.

The AWS Agent Registry can be accessed via the AgentCore Console UI, APIs such as AWS CLI and AWS SDK, or through an MCP server, which developers can query and invoke directly from their Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). The registry supports access through both IAM and OAuth (Custom JWT) mechanisms.

Teams have the option to register resources manually via the console or API, or utilize URL-based discovery. This feature automatically retrieves metadata, including tool schemas and capability descriptions, from live MCP servers or agent endpoints. Each record undergoes an approval workflow, allowing administrators to approve them before they become discoverable. Additionally, the registry can be integrated with existing approval workflows to enforce governance policies effectively.

Security and compliance are bolstered by AWS CloudTrail, which maintains comprehensive audit trails of all registry access and administrative actions. For resource discovery, the registry provides both semantic and keyword search functionalities, enabling developers to efficiently locate agents by describing their use cases in natural language.

The AWS Agent Registry preview is currently available in five AWS Regions: US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Asia Pacific (Sydney), Europe (Ireland), and US East (N. Virginia). Further information about the registry can be found on the AWS blog, with additional insights available through detailed documentation.
