Borderlands 4 introduces new Vault Hunter, C4sh the Rogue, arriving March 26
Borderlands 4 will introduce a new Vault Hunter, C4sh the Rogue, on March 26 as part of the first Story Pack. C4sh brings a unique, luck-based playstyle to the game, offering players new strategic possibilities.
Feeling lucky? Greetings, I’m Tommy Westerman, Senior Character Designer for Borderlands 4. Today, I am excited to reveal details about C4sh the Rogue, the latest playable Vault Hunter, set to debut in Borderlands 4 as part of Story Pack 1: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned on March 26.
Having been part of the Gearbox team since Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, I contributed to the design of characters like Claptrap as the Fragtrap class, Jack the Doppelganger, and Aurelia the Baroness. In Borderlands 3, we developed characters such as Amara the Siren and Zane the Operative, and later, the Clawbringer and Spellshot classes for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Now, in Borderlands 4, we have created Rafa the Exo-Soldier, Harlowe the Gravitar, and the newly introduced C4sh the Rogue.
During the development of C4sh’s Action Skills, Augments, and Passives, our team embraced the concept of a devil-may-care gambler, allowing players to manipulate luck to their advantage. Inspired by the design of Claptrap the Fragtrap, I have long envisioned tweaks and adjustments, which we have now integrated into C4sh the Rogue’s gameplay, providing an intentionally unpredictable playstyle.
C4sh’s abilities range from somewhat random to completely unpredictable, yet players can influence this randomness, maintaining the excitement of relying on luck while ensuring favorable outcomes.
C4sh’s backstory is that of a former CasinoBot who, after a successful streak in the solar system’s casinos and battlefields, acquired the magical Deck of Kanansi in a high-stakes game. Now, drawn to more thrilling and dangerous pursuits, he finds Vault hunting the perfect arena to wager on himself.
Fans have always enjoyed robotic Vault Hunters like Claptrap and FL4K, so introducing C4sh in Borderlands 4 was a natural choice. Our goal was to craft an intriguing character, whether mechanical or human. Starting with the concept of a CasinoBot obsessed with probability, we were captivated by C4sh’s quest for mystical artifacts that defy conventional odds.
Thematically, C4sh enhances Borderlands 4’s roster by embodying a gambler archetype—a rogue who, instead of thievery, uses cunning to manipulate luck. His Action Skills and skill trees reflect this unpredictability, featuring dice and card-based abilities, alongside dual revolvers for a Wild West gambler vibe.
C4sh’s Action Skills are powerful, with the potential for extraordinary effects when luck is on your side. His skill trees are unique, lacking Capstones, but each provides an extra Augment slot. By investing in all three trees, players can equip up to four Augments, offering control over the randomness of his Action Skills.
In designing DLC characters, we enjoy bending the rules. BL2’s Gaige introduced stacks, and Krieg redefined FPS combat. Despite past challenges with Claptrap, C4sh breaks new ground, and I am thrilled by his inclusion.
C4sh the Rogue will be playable across all of Borderlands 4’s narratives and locations with Story Pack 1, part of the Borderlands 4 Super Deluxe Edition. We eagerly anticipate the creative builds players will develop using his chance-based abilities, always leaving the next card draw or dice roll a thrilling mystery.
*Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned is the first of two post-launch DLC Story Packs for Borderlands 4, included in the Super Deluxe Edition and the Vault Hunter Pack, or available separately. Base game required.
