Google Faces Antitrust Deadline in Epic Games Lawsuit Over Android
In a U.S. antitrust ruling, Google admitted it originally had just 14 days to implement major changes to its Play Store practices, including ending exclusivity over billing and enabling alternative app promotion channels. The court injunction stemmed from its legal loss against Epic Games, which accused Google of monopolistic constraints. However, Google has secured an emergency stay, delaying enforcement for at least three weeks, citing potential disruption to developers and users.
The mandated reforms include allowing third‑party payment methods, prohibiting revenue-sharing exclusivity, and establishing a Technical Compliance Committee. While integration of rival stores like Epic Games Store won’t be required until 2026 subject to appeals, the case signals intensifying pressure on Google to diversify Android’s app ecosystem. Developers and regulators expect this shift to fundamentally alter app distribution dynamics globally.
