Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 explores new heights with PS VR2 integration
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is set to launch a PS VR2 update, enabling players to experience advanced flight simulation in virtual reality. The integration required extensive redesign and technical adjustments to ensure a seamless and immersive experience.
Following the announcement of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 for PlayStation 5 last year, a prominent question emerged among gaming enthusiasts: “Will it support PS VR2?” The development teams at Asobo Studio and Microsoft Game Studios quickly confirmed that players would indeed have the opportunity to explore the advanced flight simulation in virtual reality, with a complimentary PS VR2 update scheduled for release early this year. However, integrating VR support required more than just a simple modification.
Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, explained, “Cockpit interactions in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 are complex. The numerous instruments, knobs, and switches required a redesign of the interaction model to align with the PS VR2 Sense controllers, ensuring a natural and intuitive experience.”
Beyond control adjustments, the technical challenges were substantial, particularly in maintaining a smooth framerate crucial for the visually intensive game. Neumann noted, “Achieving foveated rendering with Flexible Scaled Rasterization was challenging. It influenced the entire rendering pipeline, where even minor pixel errors could lead to significant quality issues.” Additionally, the development of frame duplication technology, which allowed the render thread to process twice per main thread frame, was pivotal in reaching the necessary framerate for PS VR2 support.
While addressing these technical hurdles, the development team remained committed to ensuring the game retained its fun and engaging nature. They drew inspiration from community feedback and other VR successes, such as Gran Turismo 7. Neumann emphasized the importance of capturing the sense of scale, stating, “On a flat screen, you see a mountain. In VR, you feel the sheer mass of the rock wall as you hover your helicopter next to it.”
With over 100 aircraft available, each with unique features, the game offers diverse experiences. Neumann highlighted the challenges and satisfaction of flying airliners like the Boeing 737-8 in VR due to their complex cockpits and performance requirements. Helicopters, such as the Guimbal Cabri G2, provide an immersive experience with unmatched peripheral vision, enhancing the sensation of being suspended in mid-air.
Exciting VR moments are also a significant draw, with the PS VR2 Red Bull Air Races offering a new dimension of authenticity. Neumann described the experience as “jaw-dropping,” particularly when navigating high-G turns to spot the next pylon.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 aims to deliver an authentic flying experience with up to 125 aircraft available, appealing to both seasoned fans and newcomers. Neumann concluded, “For pilots, it is uncanny how our body movement in VR mimics real flight. VR is making flight simulation a true-to-life experience, and with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS VR2, console players can experience this incredible sensation for the first time.”
