Mumbai Autorickshaw Union Plans App to Combat Driver Refusals
In Mumbai, the Rickshawmen’s Union has unveiled plans for a new booking app to address widespread fare refusal by auto rickshaw drivers. Unlike aggregator services like Uber or Ola, the app will charge fares strictly per RTO-approved meter rates, with a nominal ₹5 convenience fee pending approval.
The initiative is a direct response to reports indicating nearly 470,000 penalty challans in 2024, with auto drivers accounting for over 70% of refusal cases. The app aims to establish a regulated, fair platform and is set to be showcased to transport officials at Mantralaya. It also proposes a structured queuing system at railway stations and aims to compete with unmetered aggregator fares. The transport department has expressed support for the app, contingent on proven commuter benefits. This app could reshape urban transport dynamics by promoting transparency and accountability.
