UK Govt Unveils gov.uk App to Streamline Public Services

The UK government has launched a new gov.uk mobile app, currently in beta, designed to simplify access to public services like benefits, tax, and travel. Developed by a 32‑person team at the Government Digital Service, the app offers customizable shortcuts and bookmarks across service categories.

This initiative aims to significantly reduce reliance on postal communication and paperwork—part of a broader modernization project projected to deliver up to £45 billion in annual savings for the UK government. Plans are underway for deepening its capabilities, including AI chatbot integration powered in partnership with Anthropic, and the introduction of digital driving licenses by the end of 2025.

The mobile‑first strategy reflects the government’s intent to boost inclusivity—especially for lower‑income and digitally underserved users—by leveraging app convenience. This shift also marks a broader move from GDS’s earlier preference for web-only services toward richer smartphone experiences inspired by models in India, Singapore, and Poland.
