Scammers Likely to Exploit Instagram Email Panic, Security Experts Warn

Users urged to avoid clicking password reset links in emails

While the relationship between the Instagram email surge and the alleged data sale remains unclear, security researchers warn that scammers are already attempting to exploit user confusion.

Experts emphasise that threat actors rarely care whether incidents are officially connected — they simply capitalise on fear and urgency.

Malwarebytes’ Shahak Shalev explained that public awareness remains crucial in situations like this. According to him, informing users about potential data exposure encourages people to strengthen account security and remain alert to phishing attempts.

Cybercriminals often take advantage of trending incidents by sending convincing fake emails designed to resemble legitimate communications from Meta. These emails may contain malicious links that redirect users to phishing pages intended to steal login credentials.

Users are therefore advised to avoid interacting with any password reset links received unexpectedly and instead perform any security actions directly from within the official Instagram app.
